The company was originally founded by Rafael Abad Santonja (1851–1911), an industrialist who created the iconic Bambú brand of cigarette papers in 1907, which became the most emblematic brand of the Alcoy paper industry. After Rafael Abad Santonja died in 1911 without descendants, his nephews and heirs, Rafael, Francisco, Emilio, and Milagros Silvestre Abad, continued operating the business under the name Sobrinos de Don Rafael Abad Santonja.
